Since the 80's, Arizona powerlifting and Rich Wenner have played a part in offering drug tested powerlifting events.
USA Powerlifting, originally known as the American Drug Free Powerlifting Association (ADFPA), was the forerunner among sanctioning bodies for events that offered powerlifters a drug free alternative. Arizona played a part as an early cornerstone in the west for the ADFPA.
Arizona USAPL has a rich powerlifting history, which includes two past Mens Open National Champions. They are Norm Hampton, who won his title in Chicago in 1990 in the 181 weight class; and state chairman Rich Wenner who won his crown in the same class back in 1985 when the event was held in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
On a few occasions the National spotlight has even landed on the state of Arizona. In 1986 ASU hosted the Collegiate Nationals, and in 1989, the Lifetime Drug Free Nationals were also held in the Grand Canyon state. Couple this with great meet directors and a strong support staff over the years which has included the likes of Tim McClellan, Louie Sampedro and many others, and you have a strong powerlifting tradition....A tradition that is geared towards providing powerlifters an alternative to using strength enhancing drugs.
USA Powerlifting of Arizona is proud to say that tradition continues.
